Daredevil’s Charlie Cox Hopes Matt Murdock Will ‘Earn’ a New Suit

Daredevil star Charlie Cox discusses potential changes to his costume, saying he hopes Matt Murdock will “earn” one iconic addition in particular.

Charlie Cox’s Daredevil might have some costume changes on the way, as Cox recently discussed how he’d like to see Daredevil’s alter ego Matt Murdock prove he deserves one iconic addition in particular.

When asked by ComicBook.com whether Daredevil’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be marked by a new costume, Cox pitched his idea for adding the vigilante’s classic “DD” symbol, but noted Matt would have to earn it. “What I would say is I’ve always liked the idea that at some point in Matt’s journey, his emotional journey, and again, I don’t know how everything what’s happening, and what might happen, and how it ties into what we ‘ve already done, I have no idea,” he said. “But I’ve always liked the idea that at some point he feels like he has earned the right to have the DD, which we’ve never had. And one day down the line, I like the idea that he just makes that decision ; we get to witness that evolution on screen. That’s just a little idea that I’ve had that I thought would be quite cool.”

Cox was confirmed to be returning as the MCU’s Man Without Fear last year after nearly three years away from the character upon the cancellation of Netflix’s Daredevil in 2018. Cox described learning he would reprise the role — beginning with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home — as “incredibly unexpected and out of the blue,” adding that keeping his return a secret for over a year was “intense.”

With Disney+ recently becoming the official streaming home for Daredevil, alongside other canceled Netflix Marvel shows, Cox has discussed what he’d like to see in a potential reboot series set in the MCU. “I’m such a fan of everything they’ve done so far, I wouldn’t underestimate them at all,” Cox said of Marvel Studios. “So if they wanted to make a more PG version of Daredevil, I back them to find a way to do it where it feels totally in keeping with everything we’ve done. And maybe there’s a little less blood, maybe there’s a little whatever, but I back them to do it.”

Wilson Fisk/Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio has joined Cox in the leap from Netflix to the mainstream MCU, with D’Onofrio most recently appearing as Kingpin in the last episode of Disney+’s Hawkeye. As such, Cox has commented on the likelihood of Kingpin and Daredevil eventually crossing paths once more, saying, “I know a little bit — not a huge amount — but a little bit. I am imagining, I am hoping, that our worlds will collide again because the stuff we’ve done in the past was tremendous fun to do, and [D’Onofrio is] such an incredible actor. We have to start every conversation with, ‘What do you know?’ because you have to be careful. It’s really exciting.”

All three seasons of Daredevil will be available to stream on Disney+ starting March 16.
