Javon Walton, who starred as Ashtray on HBO’s Euphoriaprovided some new details about his mysterious character in Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy.

“So, it’s all pretty private right now, including my character, but [showrunner] Steve Blackman and [executive producer] Jeff King did an amazing job developing my character,” Walton said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “And it’s not part of the Sparrow Academy. Everybody thinks it’s pretty crazy, what my character is. For sure people aren’t going to be able to leak this one. It is too random for people to be able to leak it, but it’s a really lovable character and I can’t wait for you all to see.”

Netflix confirmed Walton’s casting on Twitterjust days after the Season 2 finale of Euphoria on HBO. While Walton couldn’t say much about his Umbrella Academy role, the actor revealed that he didn’t have to go through a regular audition for the series. “No, there was no audition process,” Walton said. “I was called by Jeff King and he asked me if I wanted to be a part of The Umbrella Academy, and of course I did. It’s a really, really cool project and I’ve watched the previous seasons.”

Based on the graphic novels of the same name written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargeeves, a dysfunctional adoptive family of superheroes who come together to solve the mystery surrounding their father’s death. Seasons 1 and 2 followed the source material closely, adapting The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite and The Umbrella Academy: Dallasboth published by Dark Horse Comics in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

The Sparrow Academy was introduced to the Netflix series at the end of Season 2, which premiered in July 2020, as a superhero team from an alternate timeline almost identical to the titular family. It’s currently unclear if the third graphic novel, Hotel Oblivionwill factor into the plot of Season 3, but the upcoming fourth novel, titled The Umbrella Academy: Sparrow Academywill focus mainly on the Sparrow Academy.

In a previous interview, Emmy Raver-Lampman, who portrays Allison Hargreeves, said that the storylines in Season 3 will divert from the original graphic novels. “We’re running adjacent to the graphic novels, but I don’t think Emily Zogbi Steve [Blackman] is beholden at all to the graphic novels,” Raver-Lampman said. She noted that in the third season “we’re really, really doing our own thing, and I think the show has found some really cool plots to follow and explore. “

The first two seasons of The Umbrella Academy are currently streaming on Netflix. Season 3, which wrapped production in August 2021, does not yet have a release date.
