Ireland winger signs new Wakefield Trinity deal

Liam Kay Wakefield Trinity

Ireland international winger Liam Kay will remain with Wakefield Trinity in 2023 after signing a one-year contract extension.

The 30-year-old has been with Wakefield since joining the club midway through the 2020 campaign following the demise of Toronto Wolfpack.

Kay initially joined Wakefield as a winger but has been used by coach Willie Poching as a hooker.

Kay said: “I’m buzzing to be staying. It’s something I’ve wanted to get over the line for a while, so to have it sealed is great for me.

“We have a great squad here that speaks for itself. We’ve been competitive this year and are winning some games. We have a real good group of lads and it’s enjoyable to come to work every day.

“All in all, I’m just excited to be at Wakefield for another year and to see where we can go.”

Wakefield coach delighted to see Liam Kay extend stay

Kay has made more than 200 career appearances for Leigh, Toronto and Wakefield. He made his international debut for Ireland in 2017, winning three caps.

Wakefield coach Willie Poching added: “Liam has shown some versatility in the last couple of seasons and his move to hooker late last year showed a different side to his game and he worked a lot on that in pre-season.

“Whilst he started the season as a backup hooker, the versatility that he provides has come in handy for us and it did so last year on numerous occasions. With the loss of Tom Lineham due to an injury, to be able to put your back-up hooker on the wing and for him to perform the way he has is invaluable.

“It says a lot about how far Liam has come as a team player and shows that he is willing to do what is best for the team. His performances alone have earned him the reward of an extra year.

“We’re really pleased to be able to keep Liam in the squad for another season and we hope that the form he’s showing at the minute can continue for him.”

Kay will be hoping to play in his second World Cup this autumn.
