The follow-up to 2019’s On the Line was penned over the past few years, with a portion of it stemming from a week-long virtual songwriting workshop hosted by Beck. “The challenge was to write one song every day for seven days, with guidelines from Beck,” explained Lewis. “The guidelines would be prompts like ‘write a song with 1-4-5 chord progression,’ ‘write a song with only cliches,’ or ‘write in the free form style.’”
Joy’all It was produced by Dave Cobb and engineered and mixed by Greg Koller. Also rounding out the LP’s arsenal is Jon Brion, who “graciously added to the album,” according to a statement. The album includes Lewis’ “Puppy and a Truck.”
This summer, Lewis will play a string of US concerts. Read Pitchfork’s feature “Jenny Lewis Escapes the Void.”
