Joe Manganiello hints he might still return as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke by posting a new photo of himself as the character on social media.
Joe Manganiello seemed to suggest there’s still a chance he could reprise the role of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in a future DC Extended Universe film by posting a new photo of himself as the character.
The actor shared an old headshot of himself in costume as the DC villain, which had been edited to include a spectrum of bright colors, on his Instagram account. Manganiello captioned the image, “New profile pic…”
While Manganiello didn’t provide any more details, the post was unexpected following comments made by the actor back in December 2021. At the time, Manganiello said he didn’t believe he’d ever have the opportunity to further flesh out the Deathstroke character , saying, “No, I let that go a while ago.”
Manganiello made his DCEU debut as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in 2017’s theatrical cut of Justice Leaguewhich featured a post-credits scene in which Deathstroke is shown meeting with Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Zack Snyder’s Justice League Also featured a version of that scene, as well as a post-apocalyptic epilogue that showed Manganiello’s character joining forces with Batman, Cyborg, the Flash, Mera and the Joker against a rogue Superman. While the actor was also supposed to return for a spinoff film centered on Deathstroke, as well as reprise the role in The Batman when Ben Affleck was still attached, both those properties were eventually scrapped.
Though the Deathstroke film has been dead for a couple of years, Manganiello shared details about the project as recently as last April. Specifically, the actor explained, “It was more of a Tom Clancy ripped from the headlines sort of story, or even like a Bourne Identity where it was going to be really grounded, and political with military drama as far as what it would take to go from devoting his life to his country for this life he believed in, you know, having the rug pulled out from underneath him and being stabbed in the back and not knowing who to trust.”
Manganiello’s latest post also comes in the wake of rumors being circulated that Warner Bros.’ upcoming movie The Flash will erase all of Snyder’s previous installments in the DCEU — including the events of Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman and Justice League. Barry Allen actor Ezra Miller has since shut down those rumors, explaining, “No power or force in any known megaverse would or could ever erase Zack Snyder’s mighty wrkz.”
Both 2017’s Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League are streaming now on HBO Max.
