Minx Star Jake Johnson Says Abrupt Cancellation At Max Was ‘F-ing Gross’

When it was announced last year that minx had been canceled at Max despite its Season 2 renewal, star Jake Johnson was just as shocked as the fans.

Originally premiering on HBO Max (which was later rebranded as Max) in March of last year, minx had been renewed for a second season. By December, Season 2 was almost wrapped with filming when it was suddenly reported that Max had canceled the series. The future for the show looked bleak, but Starz came in for the save soon after, picking up minx for its second season. Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson is reflecting on that whole ordeal, revealing how the announcement took him by complete surprise.

“I found out with everybody else when the news broke,” Johnson says, pointing out how it was a business decision that was nonetheless pretty shady. “It was more of an existential hit, for me. It wasn’t creative or personal. It was just a huge corporation doing a snakey numbers move. The more these people keep pushing, the less it’s about art and creativity and the more it’s about data.F***ing gross.”

Johnson also described the feeling on the set wrapping up Season 2 after it was announced that the show was canceled at Max. The actor recalls how the minx cast is “so sweet” and “so new generation,” and they didn’t react angrily as Johnson might have done with his New Girl co-stars years ago if that’s what happened to them. With that said, Johnson was quick to discover that hope for the show’s future was still alive, as he explains, “I’ve become a veteran, so I contacted a friend at Lionsgate and he explained that we weren’t dead. This show was lucrative for the studio domestically and internationally. There were already three streamers showing interest. The question wasn’t if we’d find a home. It was, ‘Who wants us the most and why?'”

Whether minx gets another season at Starz remains to be seen, though even if the show ends up concluding with Season 2, that’s better than having the completed episodes shelved, never to see the light of day. For what it’s worth, Johnson is staying optimistic that he’ll be able to come back and do a third season of the series. He told THR, “I want minx to get a third season. I really want to see [my character] Doug in the ’80s, to see what happens when he does cocaine for the first time. Right now, I feel like there’s an ocean of stuff in a Doug type.”

Season 2 of minx Premieres on Starz on July 21, 2023.
