A new rumor claims that Obi-Wan Kenobi will see the return of Liam Neeson as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.
An unnamed source working on Obi-Wan Kenobi supposedly confirmed Neeson’s involvement with the upcoming Disney+ miniseries, according to a report by Bespin Bulletin. The source didn’t elaborate on how many of Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s six episodes Neeson will appear in, nor did they reveal what Qui-Gon’s role in the story will be. The report further claims that Neeson will portray Qui-Gon physically and not just through voiceover. It’s worth noting that until any kind of official announcement from Lucasfilm or Disney, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
Qui-Gon Jinn was introduced in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which establishes him as Obi-Wan’s Jedi mentor. Neeson’s character is killed at the end of that film, fighting alongside his student in a lightsaber duel against Darth Maul. Despite his apparent death, Qui-Gon’s disembodied voice is next heard in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, while Master Yoda is meditating. Yoda confirms in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith that Qui-Gon has learned how to retain his consciousness after death, and promises to teach Obi-Wan how to communicate with him.
Star Wars creator George Lucas originally planned to include a scene in Revenge of the Sith in which Qui-Gon speaks with Yoda from beyond the grave. In the end, Neeson didn’t record the required dialogue and a truncated version of the scene — minus Qui-Gon’s ghostly vocals — was used in the final cut. That said, Neeson later reprised the Qui-Gon role for three episodes of the Clone Wars animated series, so it’s possible he would consider playing the character once more in Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Neeson is now the second actor from the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy rumored to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jimmy Smits, who portrayed Senator Bail Organa in Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was reportedly spotted on set, fueling reports that the rebel leader will feature in the show. This follows speculation that Organa’s daughter Princess Leia will factor into Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s plot, with Vivien Lyra Blair allegedly cast to play the role made famous by the late Carrie Fisher.
The upcoming series is also rumored to usher in several newcomers to the Star Wars universe, including a Jedi Knight named Navi. Described as a “Jedi straggler,” Navi will supposedly seek out Obi-Wan on the desert planet Tatooine, hoping to recruit the legendary Jedi Master for a mission to overthrow the Empire and re-establish the Jedi Order.
Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives on Disney+ on May 25.
