Scream 6 On Track to Set a Franchise-Best Box Office Record

Scream VI scared its way into Thursday night previews with grosses that have the meta-horror sequel on its way to potentially earning the franchise’s biggest opening weekend.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Scream VI grossed $5.7 million in Thursday previews, including a special fan event, from 3,125 theaters. For comparison’s sake, 2022’s Scream earned $3.5 million on preview night on its way to a $30 million opening weekend. Tracking has the sixth installment debuting with at least $35 million, which would be a franchise record, besting the $34.7 million opening of Scream 3 back in 2000.

Another indication of an opening weekend that could be a record-breaker for the franchise is that the $5.7 Thursday preview debut also came out ahead of last weekend’s Creed III, which pulled in $5.5 million. The Rocky The offshoot was able to turn its preview gross into a stellar $58.3 million opening, marking a franchise-best opening for the popular boxing series, including the Rocky films.

Scream 6 is ready a hit

Scream VI has been tracking for a record opening weekend for Ghostface ever since the film secured a TV spot during this year’s Super Bowl. Ahead of its wide debut, early reactions to the sixth Scream were mostly positive, with many calling the movie the most brutal one to date. As the $33 million project expands to 3,675 theaters for its opening weekend, critical reviews and audience reaction have also been stellar. Scream VI It currently sits with a 78 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 153 reviews counted while the audience score is even better at 93 percent. CBR’s Caitlin Chappell declared the sixth entry promised a “bright future for the franchise” in her review of the film.

The sixth installment of the popular horror franchise takes the terror out of Woodsboro and into the heart of New York City, where Ghostface has once again set up a new set of rules for returning survivors and new victims. The film continues with the survivors of the Ghostface killings from the previous films as sisters Samantha (Barrera) and Tara (Ortega) and twins Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) attempt to start over in New York City. It’s not too long before they are plagued by a new streak of murders that makes it clear a new Ghostface killer has arrived to bring more dread to The Big Apple. The movie also stars franchise mainstays Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere, as well as newcomers Jack Champion, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Segarra, Liana Liberato, Tony Revolori and Samara Weaving.
