Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Latest Poster Parodies The Batman

A new poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 recreates the shot at the end of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie with a Hedgehog-Signal instead of a Bat-Signal.

The latest poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 pokes fun at Batman, with the speedy blue hero standing on a rooftop with his very own Hedgehog-Signal shining in the night sky above him.

Shared by the official Sonic movie account alongside the words “The hedgehog-symbol is not a beeper,” the tweet features the hashtag #BlueJustice, a reference to the nickname Sonic chooses for himself in the movie’s latest trailer. Sonic experiments with a crime-fighting career in the upcoming film — apprehending crooks, causing massive amounts of collateral damage, and even getting his friend Tom Wachowski, played by James Marsden, to gently tell him that he should stop pretending to be Batman.

The poster mimics the final shot of director Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, which featured Michael Keaton’s Batman standing high above the city. As Batman watches over Gotham like a silent protector, Commissioner Gordon activates the Bat-Signal for the first time, confident that the Caped Crusader is an ally rather than a villain.

The phrase “the hedgehog-symbol is not a beeper” is a reference to another film in the live-action Batman canon. In director Joel Schumacher’s 1995 film Batman Foreverthe Dark Knight, played by Val Kilmer, says “the Bat-Signal is not a beeper” after Nicole Kidman’s alluring psychiatrist Chase Meridian lures him onto a rooftop with the signal for a flirtatious late-night rendezvous.

Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic in the film, took the Batman references one step further when he retweeted the poster and wrote: “Because he’s the hero Green Hills deserves and the one it needs right now.” This is a nod to Commissioner Gordon’s final speech in director Christopher Nolan’s 2008 hit The Dark Knight.

The film finishes with Batman taking the blame for the deaths of several police officers killed by Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent, who transforms into the villainous Two-Face and is manipulated by the Joker. In the final moments of the movie, Gordon argues that Batman is “the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stars Schwartz as the blue hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as his sidekick Tails, and Idris Elba as his frenemy Knuckles. Jim Carrey — who happened to play the Riddler in Batman Forever — reprises his role as Doctor Robotnik, alongside Marsden and Tika Sumpter, who plays Tom Machowski’s wife, Maddie. The film debuts in theaters on April 8.
