The trailer for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes brings fans back into the world of Panem. Set 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as a tribute in place of her sister, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes shows the origins of how a young Coriolanus Snow created deadly games.
The synopsis for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes reads, “[The film] follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray’s charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favour. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.
The New Hunger Games The prequel features a star-studded cast
Shazam! Fury of the Gods and West Side Story‘s Rachel Zegler will play Lucy Gray Baird in the film. The actor revealed in Jan. 2023 she was offered the role without even having to audition. “It was just a call from my agent that was like ‘[director] Francis Lawrence wants you to do this.’ And I met with him for like three hours at the Soho Hotel in London, and then he told me it was that they were filming in Germany and in Poland,” she said.
along With Zegler, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes stars Tom Blyth, who is playing a younger version of Coriolanus Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the original series of Hunger Games films). Josh Andrés Rivera, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis, Burn Gorman, Fionnula Flanagan and Ashley Liao will also appear in the film.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously directed 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire2014’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. Based on 2020’s The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakesa novel written by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins, the film’s screenplay comes from Michael Arndt and Michael Lesslie.
