Larson shared this information regarding Vellani while speaking to Entertainment Weekly, stating, “I’ve just learned to trust Iman because she really has her timelines in order. She’s the one that’s always schooling us. I wouldn’t know how old Carol is without her. She really does the math.” Vellani herself displayed this skill when she corrected Larson and Monica Rambeau/Photon actor Teyonah Parris about when exactly the three of them first met, saying it was when they all went to see Black Widow together in 2021. “I just say things with enough conviction, and they believe me,” added Vellani.
This isn’t the first time Vellani’s love for Marvel Comics proved to be a worthwhile asset, as Kamala Khan co-creator Sana Amanat shared the story of how it landed Vellani the role of Kamala in the character’s Disney+ series in 2022. “She showed me every corner of her room.” [while she auditioned on Zoom]and it was covered with Avengers,” Amanat recalled. “Then she said, ‘Oh wait, I’m not done,’ opened up her closet, and there was more Marvel everywhere.”
The Marvels Will Focus on Teamwork
As for her character’s role in the film, Vellani said at 2022’s D23 Expo that she thinks Kamala has “certain expectations about what this teamwork should look like” from comics and all the stories she hears about the Avengers. “So, it’s not exactly what she dreamed it was gonna be, so I think Kamala’s kind of the glue of the group and holds these guys together,” the actor concluded.
Putting the spotlight on The Marvels itself, a synopsis from 2022 gave fans a taste of what’s in store for Carol, Monica, and Kamala when they arrive on the silver screen later this year. According to the synopsis, while Carol has “reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” the Female Fury now has to shoulder “the burden of a destabilized universe” thanks to unintended consequences. But when Carol arrives at “an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary,” her powers get entangled with those of Kamala and Monica. The three must then team up and “learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.'”
The Marvels opens in theaters on Nov. 10.
